The fifth-generation 2017 Subaru Outback was recognized for its generous passenger space, outstanding cargo room, all-wheel drive functionality, easy-to-use multimedia system and legendary reliability and safety features. The midsize crossover features standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and X-mode.

Before selecting their winning vehicles, U.S. News & World Report assessed more than 200 new SUVs, cars and minivans, considering professional reviews, reliability and safety ratings, seating and cargo volume and the availability of family-friendly features. For each award category, the vehicle that received the highest total score was named the class winner.
